Highlights from the boards for the week of May 19th – 25th:

I Asked My 6 Year Old to Like Me as Much as DH… (15 Replies)
My 6 yr old DS slightly prefers my husband. He’s an only. I am jealous and made the mistake of saying something to DS. It was veiled (and immature of me). He has been a bit more mom focused since and I feel embarrassed that I had to ask for it… should I??

I Don’t Want My DS to be Known Only for Looks… (23 Replies)
I have a good looking son and other people are always commenting in front of him about his looks, how handsome, how good looking, he looks like so and so etc etc. i really don’t want this to become his identity or his self value. I can’t prevent the comments, but what can I do so he becomes immune to them?

Key to Happy Marriage is Managing Expectations… (100 Replies)
I think the key to happiness is managing your expectations. My husband is an amazing man and I’m madly in love with him, but I used to get very frustrated with him because I felt like “a single mom.” There were things (childcare, housekepping) he just didn’t do, no matter how much I asked. I felt overwhelmed and angry. Then, I decided to just stop expecting him to do those things. I came to terms with the fact that he would never take out the garbage or do the dishes or cook dinner, and everything was suddenly Ok.

Tween Phone Convo with Friend About Liquor… (36 Replies)
Tween drama advice: I picked up the phone last night to make a call and overheard a conversation between dd (middle school) and her friend in which her friend asked dd if she could get some liquor. We have known this girl for years and she was always pushing the envelope even in preK. Do you think that I should call this girl’s mother?

Is She Cutting… (28 Replies)
DD is using her nails to press her flesh to ‘feel’- she hasn’t drawn blood. She hasn’t used a knife or razors, just her nails. She calls it cutting. Do I treat this as cutting and see therapists etc. or take a wait and see? School after talking to her, us etc. says they think wait and see. I’m not sure. If she thinks of it as cutting, isn’t it a matter of time before she steps up to drawing blood?

Recovering Eating Disorder Mom… (11 Replies)
Food question: I am fully recovered from an eating disorder but still have pretty poor eating habits (I can go for long stretches without eating without noticing). My dc now is exclusively eating solid foods (13mo) and I am worried I do not know how much and when he should eat. I don’t want to over or underfeed him. What is a typical eating schedule for this age? Do I give him unlimited food until he stops eating? Or once he has had a reasonable amount do I take him out of the highchair and say he is finished? Any books that might help me?

It’s a Keeper

beekman.gifMost modern baby gear is cute and practical, but hardly worth holding on to.

For something more meaningful and lasting, check out the baby collection from Beekman 1802, a 200-year-old upstate New York farm turning out artisanal soaps and linens. Handmade 100-percent pure cotton swaddling cloths and bath blankets are woven by an award-winning master weaver and available in four colors inspired by historical dying techniques. An 8×8 inch washcloth is also hand-loomed and features a waffle weave for absorbency and softness. Pair it with the farm’s baby soap (a six-pack of chemical-free goat’s milk bars laced with soothing calendula to calm delicate skin) for a unique shower gift.

Heirloom-quality construction makes these linens keepers that can be passed down from generation to generation — and offers a far better legacy for your wee one than a onesie.

The Memory Keeper

Monday, June 8th, 2009

babybliss.jpgYou kindly volunteered to throw a baby shower for your best friend/college roommate/sister-in-law. Now what?

The best keepsake of her special day is the sentiment. Baby Bliss in a Box is filled with cards for guests to write down their fondest wishes and homespun parenting advice (36 cards for a day-of shower activity plus 12 fold-and-mail cards for friends and family who cannot attend). The mom-to-be keeps the box as a memory and re-read the words of wisdom again and again after the baby is born.

Now that’s bliss.

Quilting Bee

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

blue.jpgInstead of handing over your hard-earned cash to a big corporate giant, you’re looking for ways to give back — even if it’s in small doses.

Online shop Namely Newborns (founded by two grandmothers, an interior designer and the co-founder of the Miami Children’s Museum) offers personalized gifts from artisans near and far. Colorful ABC quilts are handcrafted by women in rural Vietnam as part of Vietname Quilts, a community development non-profit organization. The cotton baby blankets are washable, and may be customized with baby’s name and birthdate.

You can feel a little less guilty splurging on your BFF’s baby shower gift knowing that it goes toward a good cause.

popbabyboxques1.jpgYou’re planning a baby shower for your BFF, and you have no idea where to begin. How is a mere mortal supposed to entertain co-workers, in-laws and college friends all in one afternoon?

Get the guests chatting with The Box Girls’ Baby Shower Box of Questions. More than 60 cards with mini-quizzes like ‘Who among the parents’ friends will be the baby’s worst influence?” or “If you can have one song playing while the baby is entering the world, what song would you choose?” will get the buzz going.
