Dress You Up

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

moodymamas.jpgYou’re celebrating Mother’s Day for the first time — make that Mother-To-Be Day. And you refuse to spend your special Sunday in sweatpants.

Put the pregnancy-induced moods aside for one afternoon and get all dolled up. Try a fun frock from Fierce Mamas for Moody Mamas by Christian Siriano. The Project Runway winner has done maternity dresses, like this silk charmeuse frock, perfect for mocktails and dinner.

And tell him a jacket is required.

Waiting to Inhale

fl_parfum.jpgAnother Mother’s Day, another bottle of perfume. This year, go for something more personal.

Foreverlily is a new fragrance inspired by author Beth Nonte Russell’s memoir of the unexpected adoption of her daughter Lily from China. Throughout her book, Forever Lily, the power of scent helps draw parallels with the personal awakenings Nonte Russell experienced during the incredible journey that all parents will find inspiring. This resulting eau de parfum is an Oriental blend that reminds you of life’s sweeter moments — however unexpected.

Charmed, I’m Sure

gold-sample.jpgWhen it comes time to celebrate your favorite expecting, new or veteran mom this Mother’s Day, a little jewelry goes a long way. Below are some of the latest baubles with babies on the brain:

Personalized leather cuffs by Dillon Rogers show off your kids’ names or a special message. Available in colors from butter to Burgundy, the design comes in three widths made of soft, flexible leather.

Jennifer Fisher’s Sloane necklace lets you pile on the personalization with a quartet of 14k gold heart, moon and circle charms with diamond borders. The cool configuration leaves plenty of room to add even your pet’s initials — if your heart so desires.

New moms will love the unique calendar necklace from Dalla Nonna that commemorates a baby’s birth date. The piece, in 14k yellow, white or rose gold or sterling silver, is accented with a sapphire to highlight that special day.

For the frugal but fabulous, the Recession Betty necklace by Emily Elizabeth Jewelry features a puffy vintage brass moneybag charm (yellow/green/pink gold, white gold or brown/black gold) reminding us all to spend wisely.

It’s Your Day

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

icedtea.jpgDown in the trenches of modern motherhood, you somehow manage to always put yourself last. But this Sunday, you finally come first. Aside from the poems and pictures from your kids (guaranteed to make you cry and/or start scrapbooking) — what do you really want this year?

Of course a massage would be lovely, but fighting the traffic (and the ‘tude at the spa) can undo whatever relaxed state you manage to achieve. Instead, how about some quiet time alone? Dad will take the brood out to the park while you put on some relaxing music, and doze off for an afternoon nap.

If you want to get out of the house for your spa experience, don’t settle for the usual slapdash manicure on the run. Set up real day of pampering: Start with a facial and end with a pedicure, and treat everything in between with the kind of love you really deserve. And turn off your phone.

Brunch is nice, except that wherever you go every other mom will also be there with her kids (who are nowhere near as cute and well-behaved as yours). Go on a picnic instead.

You love the idea of breakfast in bed, but not the inevitable clean-up. Leave a few easy recipes lying around — or take-out menus (that diner around the corner probably has great waffles).

Finally, after all the family togetherness, grab some of your girls for moms night out, and celebrate over mommy margaritas.

Tell ‘em not to wait up.
