Detail Your Stroller

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

sponge1.jpgIt sure was a mistake to let Junior have a chocolate ice cream that day at the beach boardwalk. And here you are regretting it, years later, when you’re looking over that old Maclaren for #2. You spent a lot of money on that sucker! And it’s still perfectly solid; just a little grungy.

If you happen to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, or the Los Angeles environs, Buggy Bubbles can help. For about $90, Buggy Bubbles will pick up your tot’s ride and make it sparkle like new: anything fabric is washed, anything plastic is de-grimed and shined, any moving parts are tightened and lubed. When it’s returned to you (or you pick it up), it’s clean, shiny, and in tip-top shape.

A Stroller That Doesn’t Fall Down

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

cadence1.jpgPushing around a baby or a small child is awkward enough without adding in stroller hassle. Yet so many strollers have fatal flaws: handles that are too short or too tall for the user, sticky wheel locks that necessitate a lot of babying, and, my personal bete noir, the stroller that’s darned near impossible to lug unless it’s folded into rolling mode. I’m talking heavy, cumbersome, and impossible to stand upright against anything without it slowly flipping over onto the floor. And then you have to pick it up. With your infant tucked between your knees.

That’s why Aprica’s Cadence stroller caught my eye. The lightweight model has a nifty feature I’ve seen in few other strollers: it balances upright when folded. That would sure come in handy if you’re lugging a kid (or two!), a stroller, and a bag of groceries on the bus. I like it in this eye-gouging pink, but it comes in more sedate shades of red, brown, and black as well.

A Bugaboo Bargain?

Friday, March 6th, 2009

bugaboo1.jpgHalf-price theater tickets, prix-fixe menus, hotel upgrades…you’d rather the stock market stabilize, but you might as well take advantage of the deals.

The ubiquitous Bugaboo Frog, the original model that launched a million designer strollers, has dropped its price to $629 (that’s $130 less than the 2008 tag). It’s still a nice chunk of change, but the adjusted cost comes with all the same features.

Now if only that antique crib would go on sale.

Gifts: For New Parents

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

pannier.jpgA first-time mom or pop is bound to over pack, even if it’s just to go to the park. Who knows when you could need an extra sweater, a passport, a thermometer, an SAT prep book…

Good thing Orbit Baby Panniers hold up to 8 lbs. of gear (each side fits a standard paper grocery bag), making sure there’s always room for another snack or diaper. Modeled after French bicycle bags, these storage compartments clamp onto the sides of the Orbit stroller (though it may fit other models as well) and feature a carry handle for easy transport. Plus, a rain fly stored in the front pocket protects your well-placed goodies during a rain storm.

Be the first on the block to have the hold-everything bag: The Panniers (available in black or mocha) roll out this month, and are available for pre-order.

Panniers, $120 per pair, available for pre-order at orbitbaby.com.

Push Around

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

img_6920.JPGWhether you’re headed to the beach, the mountains or the in-laws, the dilemma is how to transport all that baby gear. If only you had a stroller in each state.

Micralite’s Toro stroller is — you guessed it — lightweight enough for travel. In fact, it boasts one-handed maneuverability, a sliding seat that goes into a full recline, and an ability to stand when folded (a must for subway-goers). And the new All Terrain Kit lets you convert it in into an SUV-like machine with 12-inch pneumatic tires and a travel case.

One down, 49 to go.
