Downward Dog on Demand

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

newyorkyoga.jpgDVR and all-night delivery means you can have whatever you want, whenever you want it (even if that means In Treatment and Thai takeout at midnight). So when it comes to fitness, that 6am sunrise salutations class way across town can count you out.

New York Yoga offers a range of special mommy-friendly classes, including Mommy & Me and prenatal yoga, to help build strength and muscle tone. But if the class times don’t fit into your busy schedule, or you’re simply too zonked to make it to the Upper East Side, the studio offers online yoga videos. The “Yoga On-Demand” sessions include a range of levels (from beginner to advanced), styles (hatha, vinyasa, ashtanga, power) and instructors. Do one or do them all, on your own time, in the comfort of your own living room — provided you have space for a mat.

Class Act

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

dpcphotowebfall07.jpgYoga, art, music and movement — with so many classes on a kid’s roster, it’s hard to pick one to stick with through the season.

Give it a trial run: This week, the Educational Alliance’s Downtown Parenting Center is offering three free classes of children’s activities to demo its upcoming spring schedule. Today features yoga for mommy and baby to bond (newborn to crawlers), tomorrow is toddler yoga complete with animal poses and songs (crawlers to 30 months), and Friday closes out the week with a messy art project (ages 15 to 36 months).

It’s an easy decision.

When: Wed.-Fri. 3/11-3/13, 11:45am; Free (email Carol_Osher@edalliance.org to register).
Where: 197 East Broadway, 5th floor (at Jefferson St.), 212-780-2300, edalliance.org.

Get Stretched

Monday, September 15th, 2008

prenatal.jpgAttention yogis: September is National Yoga Month. So if you’re a newbie to the world of downward dog, now is the time to start — even if you’re pregnant.

NYC’s Prenatal Yoga Center recently opened a satellite studio in Cobble Hill (the other four locations are in Manhattan), with classes that link yoga postures with breath to build strength and a connection to your baby.

If that isn’t enough to get you stretching, PYC founder Deb Flashenberg says that yoga helps moms-to-be strengthen the uterus and pelvic muscles (less chance for tearing or the need for an episiotomy), aids digestion (bye-bye heartburn), and alleviates back pain, fluid retention and carpal tunnel.

Peace Accord: Yogi Beans

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

yoga-beansAs fabulous a city as New York is, it’s also plenty stressful. And that’s without construction sites and Wall Street heavyweights collapsing right and left, plus a former governor who…well, you know.

What better way to relax than to find inner peace with your baby through yoga (this time it’s the baby who’s doing yoga, not just you). Yogi Beans’ Lauren Rosenfeld teaches mothers how to place their mini yogis (or yoginis) in various positions which can aid in body awareness, sleep, digestion and relief of gas pains – kids’ classes are also available.

They say a happy mom makes for a happy baby, and vice versa.
