Monkey Love

January 14, 2009; 6:00 am by Joyce Slaton

Out at the San Francisco Zoo, an abandoned month-old baby gorilla may be getting some mama-love at last. You may recall this gorilla from December, when his young mother abandoned him soon after birth. Heartbreaking pictures showed the six-pound baby, who is as yet unnamed, wrapped in a blanket and held by humans, not his mom. Now it looks like Bawang, another gorilla at the Zoo, may be stepping in to do the job. Gorilla caretakers have been showing her the baby (through a protective enclosure), and Bawang is intently watching and listening to the baby, showing interest in hanging out with him, and sniffing him. And as we know, ladies, once you smell the baby’s head, it’s all over. Soon caretakers will begin introducing Bawang to such concepts as not stealing her baby’s bottle, and regularly returning the baby to keepers for feedings.

You can’t go see the baby gorilla yet, but you can keep up with his progress through the SF Zoo’s Twitter feed, replete with links to photos that will make you go squeeeee.  And of course, there is this video of the baby gorilla with his potential new mama.
