There’s no getting around it: many of the public pools in the Bay Area are pretty gritty. They’re old, what can I say? We live in venerable cities that typically built public pools fifty years ago, or more. After decades of hard use, they’re stained and kind of icky. And don’t even get me started on the standing pools of water in the locker rooms of just about every San Francisco pool. And how most pools are barely heated and freezing.
The city of Brisbane, however, has the cleanest, whitest, nicest pool you could hope for. Just five minutes out of San Francisco–you don’t even have to cross a bridge!–the pool is heated to a bathwater-warm 80 degrees, staffed by cheerful lifeguards, and equipped with spotless locker rooms and vending machines (in case you forgot the snacks and drinks). There’s a nice grassy lawn you can spread a picnic blanket on, or picnic tables if you want to be up off the ground. There’s even a baby pool for the little ones.
Admission is cheap: a mere $4-6 per person, and kids 3 and under have to wear swim diapers. The pool is open for recreational swimmers from 5-7pm Monday through Friday, 10:30am-1pm Saturday and Sunday. It makes a great morning outing: you get the kids to the pool, they swim like maniacs for a couple of hours, eat at the picnice tables, and everyone falls asleep in the car on the way home. Perfect.
